Sandusky Register hires Brian Kollars as regional sports editor

From The Sandusky Register

The Sandusky Register has strengthened its sports coverage by hiring a regional editor.

Brian Kollars took over Aug. 6 as the sports editor at the Sandusky Register, overseeing sports coverage across the region for the Register and the Norwalk Reflector.

Kollars was born and raised in South Dakota and graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana. He recently relocated from Dayton, where he lived and worked for 15 years.

He and his wife, Jill, have three children: Nicole, a junior at Purdue; Jake, an incoming freshman at Toledo; and Grace, who will be a junior in high school.

“This is the sixth newspaper at which I've worked — all in Big Ten country, where I feel at home,” Kollars said. “I worked at the Dayton Daily News for 14 years, seven as the sports editor, where our sections won many awards. I most recently worked for a couple college sports websites: Land of 10 and SEC Country. “

Kollars said he knew he wanted to be a journalist early in life.

“I knew in high school that I would be a journalist because most of my future engineer friends were taking calculus and I was struggling in algebra,” Kollars said. “But I loved working for the school paper.”

Kollars is excited to strengthen the Register’s sports coverage.

“My goal is to bring Register readers a strong sports report — in print and digitally — that covers all the bases locally while touching on state and national highlights, from Little League to the pros.”

In his downtime, Kollars said he wants to take advantage of what the area has to offer.

“I'm looking forward to learning how to fish and boat,” he said. “I'm already pretty good at hanging out at the beach.”
