Beryl Love named executive editor of Cincinnati Enquirer

From The Cincinnati Enquirer

Beryl Love, a Cincinnati native and executive editor at USA TODAY, on Tuesday was named executive editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer and regional editor for the USA TODAY Network’s Ohio region.

It’s a homecoming for Love, who started his nearly 20-year career with parent company Gannett at the Enquirer, where he held several newsroom positions, including news editor and general manager of the Enquirer’s magazine division.

“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity, doing what I love in the city I love,” Love said. “Make no mistake, this is an extremely challenging time in our industry. We have a lot of work to do. But the team here at the Enquirer is proven in its commitment to serve the community with journalism that makes a difference. They are passionate, innovative and ready for the challenge. I can’t wait to join them.”

Love’s appointment was announced during a staff meeting Tuesday. He replaces Peter Bhatia, who left the Enquirer in September to become executive editor of the Detroit Free Press, also part of the USA TODAY Network.

“I’m delighted when professional and personal aspirations align, and it’s great to have the opportunity for Beryl to come home to Cincinnati,” said Randy Lovely, vice president of community news for the USA TODAY Network. “I’ve worked with Beryl for many years, and his passion, skills and leadership will serve the Enquirer and the Cincinnati community well. I know he will build on the success the news team has achieved.”

Love joined USA TODAY in 2013 to launch the National News Desk, a hub that connects the USA TODAY Network’s 109 local news organizations. In that role, he established best practices to cover national breaking news and led the team that created “Nation Now,” the digital channel through which network content is delivered to local consumers. He formed the network’s Data and Investigative team, which has produced a string of award-winning watchdog projects, including a piece on abusive teachers that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize this year. He also oversees several franchise topic teams, including Money, Sports, Tech and Politics.

Prior to that, Love was executive editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal. While there, he ushered in an era of rapid digital audience growth. The Gazette-Journal’s website, RGJ.com, rose to seventh in the nation for digital reach among newspaper websites in 2010, as measured by Media Audit. He led the fight to protect open records laws in the state, winning a Gannett Freedom of Information award in 2009 for cases that were decided by the Nevada Supreme Court. Love also was active in the Northern Nevada community, volunteering on boards for the Boy Scouts of America and the American Heart Association.

“I am truly excited to welcome Beryl back to Cincinnati in this leadership role. We are lucky to have someone with Beryl’s talent, experience and understanding of the market coming in to lead the news team,” said Eddie Tyner, president of the Enquirer. “Cincinnati is a special place, and I am looking forward to working with Beryl to do everything we can to help the region continue to thrive.”

Love will begin his new role Jan. 1, working closely with senior news directors Michael Kilian and Michael McCarter. The Ohio Network includes the Media Network of Central Ohio, a group of 10 news organizations across the state.

Love is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where he was editor of the student newspaper, the News Record. He roots for the Reds, has an affinity for Greek festivals and enjoys outdoor activities with his 11-year-old son, William.
