Cox Media Group Ohio to host Open Records Forum

Overview

An editor at Otterbein University’s student newspaper requests records from the school’s police department. It says no and the case ends up in court. The Ohio Supreme Court sides with the student, ruling that the private university’s police department “meets the definition of a public office” and “must produce public records upon request.”

This decision is not yet a year old. What are the implications for private universities? Do public universities comply? Have journalists been able to get records, or are they running into roadblocks?
