Overview

An editor at Otterbein University’s student newspaper requests records from the school’s police department. It says no and the case ends up in court. The Ohio Supreme Court sides with the student, ruling that the private university’s police department “meets the definition of a public office” and “must produce public records upon request.”

This decision is not yet a year old. What are the implications for private universities? Do public universities comply? Have journalists been able to get records, or are they running into roadblocks?

Learn more about open records law at Cox Media Group Ohio’s Open Records Forum. Topics include: a closer look at the landmark Schiffbauer case; how (and when) to make public records requests, including those from campus police; and a roadmap to understanding acronyms such as FERPA, CLEIR and HIPAA.

Panelists at the Feb. 24 event include Ohio assistant attorneys general, educators and award-winning reporters.

Please RSVP by Feb. 17 to Dayton Daily News Investigative Team Editor Brian Kollars. For questions or a complete agenda, contact Kollars at brian.kollars@coxinc.com or (937) 225-2163.
