Update on ONMF 2017 Scholarship Program

Increased participation and guideline changes

By Ann Riggs

Fifty-five applications have been received for four journalism scholarships offered by The Ohio News Media Foundation, a nice increase from our total of 28 in 2016.  Judging is underway to determine the winners.  We want to especially thank all of our judges for their participation.

Ken Douthit, president of Douthit Communications Inc., will select the winner for The Harold K. Douthit Scholarship.  Effective this year, this scholarship is no longer a northeast Ohio regional scholarship and is open to sophomores, juniors or seniors attending any Ohio accredited college or university.

Richard Morris, quality manager of The Daily Standard in Celina, Emily Chambers, group vice president of human resources, Cox Media Group and Michael Throne, editor of the Chillicothe Gazette and Lancaster Eagle-Gazette are judging applicants for two of our University Journalism Scholarships.

Scott Shriner, executive editor, Record Publishing, Deb Zwez, publisher, Wapakoneta Daily News/Community Post, and Frank Corsoe, sports editor for The Toledo Blade, are judging applicants for the Minority Journalism Scholarship offered to an Ohio high school senior.  For the first time, this year a graduating high school senior will be able to select an accredited college or university within the United States and outside of Ohio for this scholarship only.  Eight applicants selected out-of-state college destinations located in Florida, California, Georgia, Virginia, Iowa, and Michigan.

The ONWA Annual Scholarship judges are Frank Deaner, retired ONMA executive director, Kevin Aldridge, opinion engagement editor for The Cincinnati Enquirer, and Amanda Crabtree, publisher and general manager for The Telegram in Jackson, Ohio.

Five scholarships are being awarded this year; two University Journalism Scholarships of $2,000 each, one ONWA Annual Scholarship of $2,000, one Harold K. Douthit Scholarship of $1,500, and one Minority Journalism Scholarship of $1,500.  Applicants must be majoring in a field relevant to our industry, particularly journalism, advertising, marketing, or a communications degree program.

Winners will be announced in early May.  A total of $9,000 in scholarships will be awarded.
