Your Voice Ohio receives grant funding for Warren and Youngstown project

The Knight Foundation today announced $2.55 million in new journalism initiatives to promote trust, media and democracy.

One of the seven recipients, Your Voice Ohio, will receive $75,000 to experiment with new engagement methods to create a higher level of trust in mainstream media. This comes on top of other funding from The Democracy Fund and Jefferson Center earlier in the year.

In the coming 18 months, Journalism that Matters at Ohio University will operate in tandem, exploring new methods of serving and engaging communities in news deserts, beginning with Appalachian Ohio. Dr. Michelle Ferrier at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism is leading that effort.

The Jefferson Center, which wrote the grant proposals and will be the fiduciary agent, is providing the web-based technology for YVO and is designing community meetings on behalf of media.

The Your Vote Ohio first-round project will be community meetings in Warren and Youngstown Oct. 22-24 at which the Warren Tribune Chronicle, Youngstown Vindicator, WFMJ-TV and WKSU Public Radio will partner with area residents to discuss personal, neighborhood and community solutions to the heroin crisis.

The Ohio News Media Association worked with Your Voice Ohio to help secure funding and support for their project.
